As a modern cycling Odyssey, Bike Odyssey always keeps connecting its stations with the rich mythological tradition of Greece.
In the case of Kato Tithorea, this proved to be even easier, since Odysseus himself not only had relatives from Mount Parnassus but had also wandered on its slopes during his childhood. A more detailed reference is given in Homer’s Odyssey itself, in Rhapsody “τ”.
In this Rhapsody we learn that Odysseus' grandfather was Autolykus, the son of God Hermes and Chioni, who was born and lived in Parnassus. Autolykus had traveled to Ithaca to meet his grandson when he was born, and he was the one who named him Odysseus.
Later, when Odysseus was a teenager, he visited his grandfather and his other relatives in Parnassus, who welcomed him with a grand feast. The next day, they began to go hunting on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, where the following incident occurred: from the noise of the hunters and their dogs, a boar rushed towards the team of Odysseus. Odysseus attempted to attack him, but the boar hit him first and managed to injure him in the leg, leaving him with a scar on his foot.
It was that same scar from which Eurycleia (Odysseus' wet nurse since he was a child) recognized Odysseus when he had returned to Ithaca and was wandering in his palace in the form of a beggar with the help of Athena, so that he would not be recognized by the suitors, while planning their demise.
The athletes of Bike Odyssey 2019 will have the opportunity to wander on the same slopes that the resourceful Odysseus walked and hunted, by racing the last stage with start and finish the village of Kato Tithorea.
